“Wine Feeling” at a Cave/Restaurant/Bar à Vin in Nice

J’adore le champagne and enjoy tasting new and different wines. So, recently I went to a (fairly) new restaurant/wine bar/cave in Nice to do a “dégustation,” (wine tasting), which included a glass of champagne and a “l’ardoise au choix” (platter of choice). This restaurant is a true gem, with friendly/welcoming and efficient service and quality in their regional products.

The aperitif served was “Tattinger Prestige,” a special champagne, which was buttery, smooth, and refreshing, and sold uniquely to restaurants and cavistes – a bubbly delice (delight)!

After discussing my preferences in wines with the owner, I was served her selection of six different wines to taste: 2 white, 2 red, 2 rosé (4 cl. / 1.33 oz each).

The food platter was composed of chorizo, coppa ham, two types of salami (rosette and rosette poivrée), smoked ham (jambon cru de montagne de l’arrière pays Niçois), along with salad.

The cheeses were right to left: St. Nectaire, Camembert au lait cru, and Chatource (pronounced like the French words for cat (chat) and bear (ours).

The dessert, ordered à la carte, was a mix of strong individual flavors, and just enough to satisfy the tastebuds and top off my stomach.

I noticed a lot of box wines on the shelves; in the U.S., box wines are generally thought of as very ordinary, inexpensive, table wines, so I was curious about the French versions.

In speaking with Marie Luce, the owner, she told me that their “bag-a-box” wines are the same high quality (like bottled) wines, and once opened, last 4-6 months. The box quantity equals 25 glasses (12 cl.) and/or 4 bottles (75 cl.) of wine.

I ended up buying a white box wine, which was placed inside a cloth, shopping-type bag, personalized with their name – a nice, reuseable souvenir to remember great ambiance, food, wine, and let's not forget to mention the champagne!
